I rather dislike DM-on-follow, both auto and manual. It seems to me to be a pointless waste of human and computer bandwidth.

The marketing-only ones are obviously detrimental to the experience. But even the others seem to me to be unhelpful. "Thanks for following me" is one example. I don't need confirmation; Twitter already told me that I started following you. The appreciation might add a human touch, but it seems to me that the effort would be better spent writing a good tweet that will keep me following you.

"If you want to get ahold of me..." It's Twitter; I already know how to get ahold of you if I want to (and you are responsive). You don't need to tell me this; doing so only wastes some of my attention. Please stop.

Part of it might be that I just don't like DMs in general. If you want to contact me privately, I have e-mail. My e-mail is not hard to find (although I could probably stand to make it a bit more prominent).

lol, I love this post. I was using Auto-DMs for awhile but felt kind of rude when using them. Kind of like a rude marketer with no skill at all. Good post :P

You are MUCH nicer than me when it comes to autoDM's!
:)
Those that use them have an agenda to sell stuff. Duh, we are all here to get SOMETHING out of Twitter...but if it doesn't start with a conversation & some uniqueness, go buy a billboard.
Cheers!

Nice article. I currently write DMs myself, but this definitely steers me clear of auto-DMs. Good analysis of the different kinds. I know lots of indie artists (bands) who have twitter accounts with many followers, how can they auto-DM someone who joins without seeming plastic and removed?
