DeviantArt Site Review

By: Kevin Palmer on 11/02/2008

Site: Deviant Art

Members: ??? The largest in the niche, however I was unable to find hard numbers

Features: The site allows the users to sell their art including traditional, digital, photographic, clothing, and manga. Deviant art also allows for the creation of specialty products ranging from jigsaw puzzles to wrapped canvases. The site has a strong community that is pretty feature rich including profiles, chats, journal, forum, and social news.

Deviant Art has a subscription-based model that allows for more features across the platform (ad free) in every aspect of the site from special features in the journal to the ability to have more deviations per page. Pricing is available for different subscription lengths but the pricing model is pretty inexpensive.

Review: Deviant Art blew me away with the amount of features that it presented to the community. My one complaint is that I found their layout and navigation really clunky and cluttered. While you are able to configure your toolbar (which serves as the main community navigation option) I just found it to be a little clunky.

That complaint though doesn’t really degrade the user experience and I found the features and the vibrant community to be engaging. If you are into a wide range of art being as an artist and/or as a fan this is a great place to be. I can see why they are dominating this niche right now.

As an artist I am particularly interested in your art reviews. I used to be on Deviant art, until I realized that many unsavory characters were using it as a free image farm, without giving due credit etc.
Perhaps they now have a system in place to prevent right clicking, I honestly do not know, but that still won’t stop Print Screen.
